My name is Tom McCauley. I'm a freelance copywriter. My current copywriting focus is on the energy sector - electrical utility and industrial equipment areas. I plan to offer copywriting services to a broader range of clients are in development because I believe that good copywriting is needed in all areas of the economy.

I have authored or co-authored 2 case studies and over 12 published peer reviewed, technical, white papers on various topics, one of which won an award. The numerous reports and Powerpoint presentations I have prepared for internal and external clients have honed my skills in these areas. Since a portion of my engineering practice is litigation support, I have also prepared expert reports for litigation involving electrical accidents, equipment and systems. Such reports must present my opinions on complex electrical matters to jurors in terms they can understand so that they can reach a verdict.

My background is in consulting engineering. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal are the key to success in this field. The writing of proposals, specifications, reports, technical journal papers, white papers and the preparation of presentations comprise a large part of a consulting engineer’s work.

For six years I taught evening division undergraduate and graduate level courses in electromechanical energy conversion at the Ilinois Institute of Technology. This experience taught me how to present complex material in easy to understand terms.

Based on my years as a consultant, I have developed the skills to determine what the customers' needs are. This involves spending time with the customers to understand their businesses and what they hope to achieve with the copy and how they propose to measure the results. I can then write to address these needs and to offer suggestions to improve the effectiveness of the copy.
