My name is Tom McCauley - the engineer who can write well. I'm a freelance business-to-business copywriter. My copywriting focus is on the energy sector - architect/engineer firms, consulting firms, electrical utility issues, electrical safety, forensic engineering and industrial equipment marketing. While my primary focus is technical, I will consider work in other areas if I believe that I can help.
My background is in engineering and I'm still a practising engineer so I can understand engineering jargon and can explain complex technical issues in simple terms.
Recently I completed a Direct Mail Package for the Natiional Fire Protection Association soliciting subscriptions to an electronic codes and standards service, "National Fire Codes Subscription Service" and a white paper for an engineering firm showcasing its expertise in construction at operating food processing plants.
I have authored or co-authored 2 case studies and over 12 published peer reviewed, technical, white papers on various topics, one of which won an award. These have been published in the IEEE Transactions on Power Systems, the Transactions of the American Power Conference, EC&M Magazine, and the IEEE Today's Engineer. The numerous reports and PowerPoint presentations I have prepared for internal and external clients have honed my skills in these areas.
Since a portion of my engineering practice is litigation support, I have also prepared expert reports for litigation involving electrical accidents, equipment and systems. Such reports must present my opinions on complex electrical matters to jurors in terms they can understand so that they can reach a verdict.
My background is in consulting engineering. And, as you know, excellent communication and marketing skills, both written and verbal, are the key to success in this field. The writing of proposals, specifications, reports, technical journal papers, white papers and the preparation of presentations comprise a large part of a consulting engineer’s work.
For six years I taught evening division undergraduate and graduate level courses in electromechanical energy conversion at the Illinois Institute of Technology. This experience taught me how to present complex material in easy to understand terms.
Based on my years as an engineering consultant, I have developed the skills to determine what your needs are. This involves spending time with you, in person or on the phone, to understand your businesses and what you hope to achieve with the copy and how you propose to measure the results. I can then write copy to address your needs and offer suggestions to improve the effectiveness of your markeing materials.
